    Used Household Goods and Personal Effects

    Required Documents:

    • Passport
    • Original bill of lading (OBL) / air waybill (AWB)
    • Detailed inventory in English or Spanish
    • Marriage/divorce certificate (if applicable)
    • Resident visa (if requesting tax exemption)
    • Proof of residence abroad for at least 2 years (returning citizens)
    • Commercial invoice (for new furniture and household goods)
    • Diplomatic franchise (diplomats)

     

    Specific Information:

    • Taxes and duties apply to new and used appliances.
    • The owner’s presence is required at Customs clearance upon request or when requesting tax exemptions on used electrical appliances and furniture for Dominican residents.
    • Demurrage charges may apply to all shipments.
    • Contact the destination agent for additional information and rates.
    • Customs clearance typically takes around 5 days.
    • Diplomats can import household goods and personal effects duty-free by requesting a franchise through the Dominican Foreign Relations Office at the origin embassy or consulate.
    • Returning citizens who have lived abroad for at least 2 years with no more than 180 days’ stay in the Dominican Republic may qualify for tax exemptions.
    • Wood packaging materials must comply with ISPM-15 regulations.

     

    Motor Vehicles

    Required Documents:

    • Original title/registration
    • Original bill of lading
    • Purchase invoice

     

    Specific Information:

    • Diplomats can import motor vehicles duty-free.
    • Returning residents who have lived abroad for more than 2 years with less than 180 days’ stay in the Dominican Republic may apply for a partial exemption.
    • Vehicles must be less than 5 years old from the date of manufacture.
    • Non-motorized bicycles can be imported duty-free as part of the household effects shipment.
    • Motorized boats are subject to approximately 20% of the purchase price.
    • Motorcycles are subject to duties.

     

    Pets

    Required Documents:

    • Rabies vaccination record
    • Veterinary health certificate

     

    Specific Information:

    • Birds will undergo a minimum 10-day quarantine.
    • Pets can be imported duty-free.
    • The veterinary health certificate must be issued at origin within 15 days prior to import and indicate that the animal(s) has been disease-free for the preceding 3 months.
    • Authorization from the Department of Agriculture and the National Zoo is required for importation.

     

    Restricted/Dutiable Items

    • Live plants (require a phytosanitary certificate from origin and a permit from Dominican Agriculture after arrival; should not be sent as part of household goods shipment)
    • Alcohol and wine (only small quantities for personal consumption permitted)
    • Food items (only small quantities for personal consumption permitted)
    • Medicines, narcotics, and drugs (require a doctor’s prescription; duty-free; unauthorized items may result in criminal prosecution, penalties, or deportation)
    • Household goods and new furniture (require a commercial invoice and are subject to duties)
    • New electrical appliances (subject to duties)
    • Firearms (personal firearms require a military permit obtained in-person after owner’s arrival but prior to shipment arrival; unauthorized items may result in criminal prosecution, penalties)
    • Appliances, spare parts, and machines (subject to duties)
