    Used Household Goods and Personal Effects Required Documents:

    • Copy of passport
    • Valid non-citizen work visa (minimum 12 months validity)
    • Bill of lading (OBL) / air waybill (AWB)
    • Packing list
    • Valued inventory
    • Exemption form from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (for diplomats)
    • Travel certificate showing inbound and outbound travel dates obtained in Chile (for returning citizens)


    Additional Information:

    • All shipments are subject to physical inspection by Customs and the Agricultural Office (SAG), which may cause delays in clearance.
    • New household goods are generally assessed a 6% duty over the cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value, plus a 50% surcharge on used goods if no exemptions can be applied.
    • A value-added tax (VAT) of 19% is applicable over the CIF value.
    • Customs valuation of household goods considers depreciation for use and must be comparable to the value of similar items in the country of origin.
    • Returning citizens are exempt from duties and taxes up to USD 5,000, depending on the length of their stay abroad.
    • Non-citizens with a temporary residence visa or work visa of at least 12 months can import up to USD 5,000 of used household goods and personal effects, subject to a nominal tax of 1% over the CIF value.
    • Under-bonded storage at the personal residence is possible if the visa is still in process.
    • Definitive importation of goods must be completed within 90 days.
    • Diplomats and international officials are exempt from import duties and taxes on household goods, requiring an exemption form from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
    • All wood packing and items must comply with ISPM 15 standards. In the absence of prior treatment, the Agriculture Office may order complete fumigation (wood furniture is exempt).


    Motor Vehicles Required Documents:

    • Sales contract / commercial invoice
    • Certificate of title
    • Original bill of lading
    • Sworn declaration of the vehicle’s description
    • Fumigation Certificate (for cars shipped from the US to Chile)


    Additional Information:

    • The weight and freight amount of household goods, including the vehicle, must be listed on the original bill of lading.
    • The car’s description and number of pieces must also be included.
    • Import of new cars is allowed, subject to all applicable duties and taxes.
    • Import of used motorcycles is strictly prohibited.
    • Import of used cars is strictly prohibited, except for returning citizens who have stayed abroad for over 12 months. In such cases, all duties and taxes apply (27%).
    • Foreign diplomats and international officials can import automobiles duty and tax-free.
    • Chilean diplomats have the option of monetary compensation if they choose not to import a vehicle or can import a new car if the owner pays all duties and taxes.


    Pets Required Documents:

    • International vaccination certificate (for dogs and cats)
    • Veterinary health record
    • Pro-forma invoice


    Additional Information:

    • There is no quarantine period for pets.
    • Pets can be retrieved from Customs immediately upon arrival.
    • Agents must be informed in advance of the arrival date and flight to assist with the clearing process.

    Note: Check with the destination agent for any additional permits required by the Agricultural Office (SAG) when shipping other types of pets.


    Restricted/Dutiable Items:

    • Only non-perishable food (canned or sealed) limited for personal use may be imported.
    • Adults over 18 years old can import 2.5 liters of alcohol duty-free, including wine. If the amount exceeds 2.5 liters, duties and taxes of 27% or more must be paid by the owner of the goods.
    • Only sports firearms for hunting may be imported with a special permit obtained prior to shipping.
